In 1989 metronidazole was approved as the first topical treatment specifically for rosacea. It can help to reduce rosacea flare-ups once the rosacea is brought under control. In North America Metronidazole is sold under various brand names including Metrogel (and Metrolotion & Metrocream, all 3 contain .75% metronidazole and are manufacturered by Galderma Laboratories, Inc.) and Noritate (1% metronidazole cream). In Australia and New Zealand the equivalent of Metrogel is called Rozex.
Use
Metronidazole, (Noritate, Rosex or Metrogel) cream or gel is used for the treatment of rosacea, that is an infection of skin of the nose, forehead, and cheeks which is marked by redness, flushing, and an acne like rash.
How It Works
Metronidazole, (Noritate, Rosex or Metrogel) has anti bacterial and anti inflammatory properties. It is thought that these properties reduce the inflammation, redness, and clear up the acne like rash.
Side Effects
Metronidazole, (Noritate, Rosex or Metrogel) is generally well tolerated, but skin irritations can occur - dryness, stinging.
Cautions for People
People should avoid applying Metronidazole, (Noritate, Rosex or Metrogel) cream or gel in or around the eyes.
Drug Interactions
Metronidazole, (Noritate, Rosex or Metrogel) should not be applied with other creams, gels, or ointments, because the effectiveness of both will be reduced. When applying Metronidazole, Noritate, Rosex or Metrogel, the skin should be cleaned thoroughly, then the cream or gel can be applied.
